Poor piggy!!

I have 2 guinea pigs. 1 died the other day. I am trying to find out why so that it doesn't happen to the other one. It first stopped eating and drinking, stayed in the corner, yellow yucky stuff came from its eyes a few times, then got a glaze look. Started like flipping out for a few min, then would stop.almost like he was having a seizure. Breathing got slower and slower, I looked in his mouth and he had shavings in there, I kept pulling shavings out of his mouth. He fianlly died, I couldn't save him. Do you think he got a cold. He was acting very strange, very strange, like he kept turning his head real quick when nothing was there. Do you know what could have happened?Thanks for anything you could tell me. I feel like I didn't do enough.

First, sorry for the delayed response.  I am having trouble with AllExperts emails.  Well, it sounds like any number of things could have caused this animal's death.  Did you take it to the vet?  I am not a vet, so I cannot say for sure what your animal died of.  All I can say is this -- please be sure you carefully watch the other animal -- if this disease is contagious, it will soon appear in the other one as well.  If this happens, please take the 2nd animal immediately to a reputable small-animal vet.
