Question about Pregnant guinea pig

Question
Hello.  We adopted a guinea pig daughter/mother pair and, after getting them home, we suspected the mother was pregnant again.  Sure enough, after calling the pet shop, they discovered that a male had been left in with the group (by their mistake). So, we were fine with that and decided to carry on and welcome the new babies.

Well...now she is about 2 weeks from what we are estimating to be her due date (based on when she was in the cage with the male).  She is definately not huge..but she is very pear-shaped and the rounded area is very firm and heavy..unlike a simply overweight pig whose belly is softer.  But I'm having a heck of a time understanding what I'm feeling when I touch her belly.  Many of the books I've read describe being able to feel the skeletal structure of the babies and feeling body parts, etc, thru the sow's belly.  But I don't feel that.  I feel bumps and vibrations...but it is very subtle and it is hard to tell what I'm feeling!  Plus, like I said, she is not huge..but very noticeably bigger and rounder than an average pig.

We adore her and our first concern is her well-being...so I guess my questions are:

1.  Is the fetal movement I described normal?
2.  Should I be concerned if she isn't getting HUGE?  She is big...but not massive like many photos in the books and websites I've looked at.

I know these questions might be difficult since you cannot see her....but I thought I'd try!  Perhaps this is a sign of one baby.  It is very hard to tell what is going on.

Many thanks!!

Whitney

Answer
Hi,
Are you sure she is pregnant? She could be over weight. I have a pregnant guinea pig too and I can feel bumps but not vibrations yet since she is not as close to having her litter. The vibrations can be the babies kicking in her womb and grinding their teeth. The fetal movement you are describing is alittle bit normal, are you feeling kickers? If you are then the movement you are describing is normal. She should be gaining half of her weight from her newborns and be taking a shape like a pear. If you are not sure than take her up to the vet and get her  examined to make sure she is pregnant. She might have had a miscarriage if you say it is hard to tell the fetal movement.I bet she will have at least one baby and the baby or babies might not be ready to deliver since it takes about an average of 61-64 days though that is a long time for a guinea pig.Take her up to the vet. I hope everthing turns out okay and don't hesitate to ask me any more questions!!
