Question
Hi,
I am new to the world of Guinea pigs, but love my little guy to death now that I have it. Latte eats pellet food, hay and I also give her carrotts, spinich and apples for breakfast and dinner also. How much food should I be giving her? Cause she does eat a decent amount, how much is to much or not enough?
Thanks
Adrian

Answer
Hello Adrian.  :)

You should fill up the pellet dish one time a day, and no more. This way you can begin to understand how much your piggy eats, and know something is wrong if the pellets are all of a sudden not being eaten. This is all the pellets she needs any ways. Hay should be non-stop supply. Now we talk veggies, my piggy's favorite subject. :)

The pigs can be given one meal (pick one time a day, i usually do a dinnertime where i fill the pellets / give veggies). Let me give you an example of how much a piggy shoud eat. It's hard to just say half a cup of veggies or what not, because of the size of the different veggies.

A couple baby carrots, a few strands of parsley/cilantro/spinach/dandelion greens (one of these), a few cut off pieces of a larger veggie romaine lettuce/swiss or red chard (one of these) and maybe one SMALL slice of fruit (apple, pear, melon). This should be it. It really doesn't take much to allow us to give our pigs the vitamin c they need. I do prefer to not give out too much fruit, as pigs can develop diabetes. I stick to a small slice of an apple once a week. I usually give some extra baby carrots at night as a treat.

Here is a website that lists all the different veggies that you can feed your pig.    www.guinealynx.com

Also, there are some veggies that you shouldn't give too much of because they are either high fat, or contains things that can stress your guinea pigs digestive track. Those veggies that should be limited are veggies such as spinach, lettuce, collard greens, turnip greens    Just to name a few. A few of the really good veggies that carry alot of vitamin c and are healthier for the pig are dandelion greens, chard, cilantro.

Hope this helps.
Christy :)
