Infection on my guinea pig

Question
Can girl guinea pigs get infections in their girl parts? My female has a smelly crusty stuff on her privates and she cries when I try to clean her off. She bites me if I try to touch her there to wash her. What should I do?

Answer
Yes, piggies can get infections through any orifice/opening on their bodies. You need to make sure that her bedding is completely clean or poops and urine removed as soon as possible. She may have even scratched herself in that area.

I would prepare a comfortably warm bath for her to soak in. Perhaps include Epsom salts or regular salt or baking powder, if that is all you have. You will have to allow her to soak for a few minutes and then lather her belly, etc with mild soap. Rinse her as well as you can and attempt to clean the area. You could also try cleaning her with baby wipes (warm).

I would observe her and continue this routine until the problem resolves. If you are worried you can take her to the vet, but that depends on your finances. The vet can be very expensive. I would try the warm water baths first.  Good Luck, Cindy
