guinea pigs outside of cage

Question
Hi
I have read that owners let there guinea pigs room free outside of the cage. How can this be done and not have stool and urine all over?  I want them to have time outside of the cage and I do set up a play pen area, but it is very time consuming to set up, clean up stool, and brake down the play pen.  I do put down a litter box, but I haven't had much success.  Also, I have read how owners hold their guinea pigs, have them on the sofa or in their bed and they fall asleep.  How can this be done without the guinea pig soiling the area?  I love my guinea pigs and want to hold them and interact more with them and welcome suggestions on how this can be accomplished.  Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Answer
Hi Lisa

Most guinea pigs will give their owner a warning when they need to pee when they are on your lap by biting your clothes or giving your arm a nudge. However, they do not think twice before depositing their poop on you, but seeing as this is hard pellets, its not such a problem I find.

When owners let their piggies out for floor time they have to be prepared for some soiling unless they are potty trained, so its best to use an area that can be soiled such as outside or on a patch of grass.

I hope that helps but please write back if I can be of any further assistance.
