Question
Wallis and grommit are not brothers, but I got them from the same pet shop at the same time, when wallis was 4 months and grommit a bit younger. Interestingly they were not in the same cage, but each in with a rabbit and so I assumed this was 'cos the rabbits were male/female. They were given a shared hutch and full run of the garden any time, and this was great for about 3 months when then rumbling and but nipping began. By July Little grommit was really staring to annoy wallis ( who has always seemed the gentler and sweeter natured)But one day we found Grommit with half his snout bitten off so separated them. He is terrified of humans but wallis remains calm and ok with humans. Any attempts to reintroduce them creates teeth grinding noise immediately. CLearly these 2 can't get on so ..... If I was to get them neutered would they be able to get on with females, ie I keep 1 and get some girls and give 1 away to some other girls? Asside from my own disappointment i am really worried that these social creatures are missing out on ordinary social stuff, and also getting rather cold at night - also that they need more input from me to compensate for thier lonely absent interactions. Might they grow out of it? HELP

Answer
Hello Jane,

Unfortunantly, as boars become full grown they sometimes they decide they do not want to live together anymore. If they can be near each other (cages next door) and still talk to and sniff each other, their need for friends will be met. Getting them neutered to live with females is always an option. Most boars take very well to female company. You can discuss their suitablity for the surgery as well as when they can safely be introduced to females with your vet. They won't grow out of this though. It's just part of the maturing process and some boars are just not good with each other. Also, spending alot of quality time with Grommit should help him to over come his fear in time.
