Question
QUESTION: I work in a pet shop and have brought a 7week old female guinea pig home to care for as she is very sick. She has her head tilted to one side and can't move very well, she falls over sometimes and finds it hard to get up. She's eating ok but i have to hold her drinking bottle to her mouth to drink. She doesn't seem to be able to urinate but she has some poo stuck round her bum. She's been to the vet and they said she could have a neurological disorder. They gave her an injection of vitamins and gave me stuff to put in her water. Is there anything else i can do as i'm not sure the vet knew exactly what was wrong or what to do.Do you think she is in pain?Would it be best to put her to sleep?Could there be anything else causing this?

ANSWER: Hi Alison
this sounds like head tilt also called wry neck ( torticollis ) and some piggies manage fine with it.It could also be an inner ear infection.
If she stumbles around and acts like shes had a few too many, that would suggest a nueurological problem such as a stroke
If she can negotiate her way around then its probably head tilt.I ould not have her put to sleep and its unlikely that she is in pain.
Wait and see if more symptoms show and get back to me if you feel you need to.
Hope all goes well

QUESTION: Hi i wrote to you yesterday about a guinea pig from my pet shop with a possible neurological disorder. I went back to the vet and was given an injection to give to her myself to help her urinate but i haven't seen any yet. There was a tiny bit of woodshavings in the corner that were wet but that's it. Last night in the middle of the night she was running round the cage really well squeeking really loud after i gave her some water. She fell over a couple of times but she was doing really well. I'm sure if she could urinate she would survive. Is there anything else i could do to help her?

Answer
Hi
you can feed her dandelions as these are a natural diuretic and piggies love them.
They must come from an area where dogs have not pooped or peed, and away from any traffic fumes - I get mine from the local cemetary where no dogs roam and theres no pesticides or car fumes etc.
She may have some brain disorder - try your vet again.
ask the vet for the same medication but in powder or tablet form rather than injectables and these are easier to administer
