Can guinea pigs eat normal white paper?

Question
Is it safe for guinea pigs to eat reguler white paper? Me and my sister have 2 guinea pigs of our own and we ran out of bedding one day. So we decided to shred paper, and put it in their cages. They are both boys and are in seperaret cages. But my guinea pig started eating the paper right away after I put him back in. Why did he eat it? Is he bored, scared, sad, how can you tell what a guinea pigs emotion is?

Answer
Guinea pigs usually eat some of their bedding so they can figure out what it is.  Their eyesight is not like ours so they investigate with their mouth and teeth.  It is OK.  Just don't use paper from a shredder.  I had a bad experience where one of my pigs got paper cuts that got to be quite infected very quickly.  Just put in some flat newspaper and roll it up to replace every day or two max.  It does not absorb urine.  Hope you can get more bedding but that was ingenious thinking on your parts!  BRAVO.

To tell about your piggies' emotions, I would play and talk with him all of the time and give him his favorite veggies!  That will make a happy piggie.  Keep Up The Good Thinking!  Cindy
