Guniea Pigs eating but no water

Question
QUESTION: I have 3 happy Guinea pigs about 9-12 months old. I have noticed that they almost never drink water and wonder if I am giving them too much veggies or if they don't like the water. I have 2 water bottles out- they each get about 1 1/2 cups of veggies a day, pellets and all the hay they want. They pee enough and in their box, but the water stays there. They are happy, but it worries me that they don't drink. Thanks, Stephanie

ANSWER: Hi Stephanie

I hope Texas has nice weather for you, I know here in Sheffield, England is very nice today.

The fact that your pigs are peeing and all 3 dont drink much leads me to conclude that the veggies you are giving is providing them with plenty of water.

If you cut down on the amount of watery veggies like lettuce and cucumber and celery then you will find that their water intake increases. You could also try putting a bowl of water in the house in case they havent figured out how to use the bottles.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

QUESTION: Thank you Andy! I did think about that, but have read so much about making sure they have enough water and this is from owners/web sites that instruct to give them plenty of veggies, and pellets etc. so thus came the question. I did want to ask you then if you feel it is ok that they are getting their water from  their veggies vs. a bottle? As long as they are getting it? They would not love mommy if I cut back on the veggies. I did hear that they can get bladder infections with too much water intake from vegetables though- is this true? ( that came from the Pet Store though) Oh,and we are getting stormy, rainy weather in Texas right now ( winds at 100- 125 miles per hour).  I have a dear friend that lives in Wales ( Isle of Anglesey)  and we joke about your hot weather ( 70's) compared to our 100's in the summer.. Ughh.. We'd give anything for summers like that, but I know some that love that hot weather. Thanks for responding so quickly. God Bless, Stephanie

Answer
Hi again

Well, its more that bladder infections show themselves by an increased thirst rather than drinking a lot causing bladder infections.

Keep the veggie intake the same then and just monitor them on a daily basis. If you have an other concerns, you know where to find me.
