Question

 Hi,

I recently bought a guinea pig for my 6 year old son, and we take care of him together.  Thing is that he is soooo super timid, hates to be out of his cage, poops and pees all over if we do.  He's been squeaking for no apparent reason.  Help we love and adore him and want to handle him but he doesn't seem to like us much!

Answer
Well guinea pigs do make a lot of noise when they are excited or afraid or happy. The thing is you should understand that it takes time and patience to get your guinea pig to not be so afraid. It can take months for some people, but you just have to have patience. Guinea pigs are just naturally skiddish and run and hide because they really can't defend themselves against you. Until they realize that you are not out to harm them he will continue to hide and squeak if you try to hold him. If you try holding him a little bit everyday he will realize that you are not there to harm him. I know at work some guinea pigs would run and hide from me all the time, but some took to me much more easily than I thought. Guinea pigs do pee and poo everywhere though. They did that all the time with me. I just had to make sure they didn't do it somewhere I didn't want them too. :-)
