Answer
Christina, it sounds like your little guy is very sick. The hardest about thing guinea pigs is that they don't show us they're sick until they're very often really bad. It doesn't sound like your vet had any idea either. I'm sure it's not that he just didn't care.

The fact that he doesn't want to move is not a good sign. I can't tell you what is wrong with him other than he's ill. As far as the shedding when you pet him that's normal when they're ill. The coat reflects overall health. Most animals are that way. Crusting at the nose could mean that he either has a respiratory infection or it could also just be reflective of his general state of being. That happens in both cases.

It's good that you separated him. Try to keep him quiet, cover his cage and see if you can encourage him to take water. You might have to use an eye dropper or a small syringe to see if he is willing to drink. The mucus on his bum is part of the whole illness package.

You might try a little thing that was given to me by another cavy breeder. Get some Vitamin E capsules. The kind with the liquid inside. Put a little hole in the gel capsule and squeeze the liquid into his mouth. We use that for pigs who are under stress from shipping or traveling and sometimes when they just appear not to feel well.  Do this twice a day.  I can't guarantee it will turn him around at this point, but it surely won't make him worse.

I'd give anything to be able to give you more encouragement, but it sounds like he's very ill and may not turn around again. I know that's not what you're hoping to hear. I just don't have a better answer. Please let me know how  he does. I really do care.
