Guinea pigs have mites!!

Hey Becky,
I went to the vets and found that my guinea pigs have mites. We used the
stuff they gave us but we cant afford to buy it. We went to pets at home and
got some spray but it is not working. do you know anything that might work
cos rust y has it quite bad. We were going to go back to the vets but they
dont give us anything that helps!!
I heard that you can get them an injection from pets at home but i dont know
how much it is going to cost.

Hi Catherine.  The best treatment you can get to treat mites is something called ivomectin which is prescription only from a vet.  In severe cases of parasitic or fungal infections in the skin, this is really the one and only that will successfully treat it.  Sprays for mites are useless and i never recommend them.  You won't be able to buy anything to inject from pets at home, however i'm wondering whether you are thinking of something called spot on which is a strong medication applied to the skin which is what many vets will choose to treat with too.  (You will find this to buy in my own online small pet store.)
