13day old male guinea pig

Question
My sow gave birth 13 days ago to one male, one female pup. A few days ago I heard the rumble or purr coming from the male baby. I have researched that they reach sexual maturity at 3 weeks. Is there any chance he has reached it early? I saw him trying to mount his sister this morning and have separated him. Is it too soon to separate him from his mother or is it ok?

Thanks
Darcie

Answer
No, the baby boar is not sexually mature enough to have impregnated his sister. It's possible the sister came into her first heat, but the brother's testicles have not yet dropped and he is not (or shouldn't be) fertile. But of course nothing in this world is absolute but death and taxes. Stranger things have happened, so we can't completely rule out anything.

When a litter has lost the mom they can survive without her after two weeks of age. They will be eating from the food bowl and drinking from the water bottle by then. It's best to leave them with mom, but if you're really stressed about it you can safely remove him. If you have the dad then put the baby boar with him. Dad will comfort him and keep him from being too stressed at leaving mom so soon.

You will have to be the judge of whether or not you're comfortable pulling the little guy at this point. The sows don't usually stay in heat more than two or three days at best. It isn't going to harm him if you need to remove him away from mom.
