Question
Hi,
My guinea pig is very thin. What's weird is I always see him eating and drinking. He eats most of his treats. His chin always seems wet, too. Why isn't he fatting up. Should I give him some oats? Any help is great. Thanks

Answer
Hello Cheri and thanks for the question.

According to the symptoms you have provided (wet chin and loss of weight), I would bet your GP has malocclusion. Malocclusion is when a GP's teeth do NOT grow correctly. It can be diagnosed and treated by a vet that specializes in exotics and GPs. Make sure that the vet gives the GP a full dental exam (sedating the animal if ness.). An xray of the molars is also very important.

If it is NOT malocclusion, it may be that the GP is not getting the RIGHT kinds of food. GP blend with timothy hay and fresh fruits and veggies are a good mix to feed GPs. If you are following this and he is still too skinny, see a vet. Rapid loss of weight indicates serious illness that must be treated by a vet.

Good luck to you and your little friend,
Ryan
