Question
My Pigs just had 2 baies I dont know what to do. They seem to adjust very well but are there special steps I need to take or special precautions? When will they be ready to leave the mother? They like to play what are some safe toys that the babies will enjoy? When can I handle them?
Thanks
-Kim

Answer
Hello Kim

Is the female and babys still with the male? if so and its been at lest 12 hours since she gave birth shes pregnant again because guinea pigs like all other rodents come in heat a few hours after giving birth and back to back pregnancys are very weakening on the mother and the future offspring it also shortens life span greatly. They need no different care just be sure they dont jump from your hands where you hold them as they are jumpy at this age. The babys are normaly weaned at four weeks but some perfer to take the young males out at three weeks as some young males get fertile at this age and can mate with there mtoher/sisters. The females can stay with there mother for life if needed. Giv ethem cardboard boxes with holes cut in them, toite paper tubes slit down one side to prevent anyone from getting stuck for an extra precaution yuo can fill them with hay, childrens building blocks(be sure there non-toxic), rabbit toys from pet stores and some wooded bird toys.
