Breeding older pigs

Question
Hi,
Thanks for your last answer, I just have one more qn. My older female of about 2yrs might be pregnant (the male got in with her). She has had a litter before but that was a year ago, since then she has gotten alot fatter, not obese just fat. Is it likely that she will have any problems giving birth?

Answer
Hi Georgina,

She should be okay. Generally, it is not recommended that you breed guinea pigs for the first time when they are older than six months of age, but as she's had a litter before, at two she shouldn't be too old. Please be aware that being a breeding female can shorten a piggy's lifespan, so if yours is a pet, you may wish to make this her last litter so that she can live into a happy and healthy old age.

Try to cut back on the treats to make sure she has a healthy pregnancy, but give her extra veggies in the later stages as she'll have an increased appetite. If you are concerned, it's a good idea to have a vet on the phone during the birth

As she's had a litter before you may well know more than me about preparing for the birth, but if you do have any questions about it, or what to do when the babies arrive ... just ask!

Jenny.
