Whats happening to my Guinea Pig?

Question
We've had Madeline for a few months now. We got her as a baby, and she acclimated beautifully in our home. Slowly but surely, she learned to trust us and even developed some bonding with us. She became so comfortable that she learned to climb in and out of her cage, just roam her surrounding and enjoy her environment.

Then, about a week ago - Madeline became extremely aggressive. She WILL NOT come out of her cage, and when we try to get her out she refuses and start to attack us, biting really hard. She eats and drinks - but not as enthusiastically as before. She lets me pet her in the cage, but will not let me pick her up. Today, when I really insisted and tried to get her out for some cuddling, she got so freaked out that she turned on her back and started screaming....  I felt she was truly traumatized by something. I left her alone but almost cried.

Her "official" owner is our 6 years old daughter, who has been really great with her. She is usually very gentle with Madeline, but on occasion, could be rough. Could Madeline be afraid of coming out to play, and if so  - what do we do???? How do we make her trust us (and our daughter!) again?

Or could be sick with something?
HELP, MY HEART IS BREAKING!!!

Answer
Hi

Based on what you have told me, I would want to rule out a medical cause first. I suggest you get Madeline checked by a vet for any injury, illness, etc.

Please then let me know what you are told and we can, if applicable, investigate behavioural issues together.
