Guinea pig pup size

Question
One of my females, Babs, is larger than my male. Babs had two babies a few weeks ago, but they did not make it. On a Friday night, she looked like she had the hiccups (which I now think were contractions). Two days later Sunday afternoon, she had the babies on her own but they were dead. I tried reviving them using a towel, but it did not help. This was my first time seeing pups, so I was not sure what to expect. She did not completely clear the sack off of their faces and they were huge! I measured them and  both babies were 6 inches long. Is that typical? I'm not sure which one killed them. Should we not breed her again? We made sure that we did it early enough so that we could do it again and not put her in a lot of danger.

Answer
Hi Amanda.  6 inches is big, but not unusually huge.  If you know weights that would give me a better idea on size.  Most average 4-5oz or so.  They died because the sacs were on their faces, not because the parents killed them.  If your male is still in the cage and was there the day she had the babies then she is pregnant.  Chances are high he rebred her right away, she'll be due in 68 days from that day.  If he wasn't in there and you want to breed her again, give her a month or two off to recover.  The second time around moms are more likely to clean the babies.  Also you could put her in your bedroom around delivery time and you might hear her giving birth and be able to get the sacs off the faces.  As long as the sac gets off the nose, the mom will do the rest (you want to let her do some of the cleaning).  The hiccups were probably contractions, esp. if she was arching her back a bit.  I hope this helps!
