guinea pig bedding pests/worms

Question
I've had 4 guinea pigs for a couple of yrs now. Just recently, we've been seeing white worms about an inch long crawling from the cages to the wall. GROSS!!! We had some fruit flies here & there, got rid of them, but still see the worms a couple times a week. We were using alpine bedding but it doesn't absorb well, so we switched to the crumbled cardboard-looking stuff last month. I clean out their cages twice per week....what do you think?

Answer
Hi - are your guinea pigs indoor or outdoors? I'm not familiar with those beddings. Aspen or Carefresh is usually good. Many feed stores sell large bags of shavings for cheap.

How large is the cage? Have you seen www.guineapigcages.com? Removing any veggies or fruit that is uneaten immediately is a good idea. Fruit flies are usually attracted to moisture.

Try to thoroughly bleach and scrub the cage as the eggs could have rehatched and left more. What are you feeding your pigs?

Can you clean the cage daily until they are gone?
Apple cider vinegar in a dish with a bit of dishsoap mixed in has worked to attract the flies away.
