Question
I have a five year old male guinea pig who's the sweetest thing!  He purrs and enjoys physical contact so much :)

I have a one year old famale guinea pig who is just the opposite.  She won't let us pet her or play with her at all :(

I really want her to be a sociable as the male, so can you give me some tips on how to make her more comfortable?

By the way we've has her for 6 months and they are not in a cage together, although their cages are right next to each other :)

Answer
Suzan,

It'll take some time for her to get comfortable with you. It depends all on how much time you can provide to work with her.

Guinea Pigs communicate in three different ways, through sound, smell, and touch.

Now with that in mind, when ever around her cage talk to her. She'll soon recognize your voices and feel more trusting of you.

Place a small rag in her cage with your scent on it. With that she'll become more relaxed as she'll soon know your scent for sure.

Before picking her up, talk to her first for a few minute, then allow her to smell your hand for a few minutes, pet her for a short time and then pick her up and sit with her. By doing this your reinforcing who you are and in the end she'll feel comfortable with you as she will trust you.

Also play some classical music on low volume near her cage. I know it sounds odd but the effect it has on Guinea Pigs is helpful. It seems to calm down nervous Guinea Pigs, and relaxes Guinea Pig which in turn makes them more friendly and trusting.

Handle her a little more, sit and talk with her, pet her and play with her more so she can develop a better trust bond with you. That'll help in getting her friendly and lovable.

I hope this helps,
  Take care,
    Jules
