Mommy guinea pig

Question
Hello. My mommy guinea pig gave birth to 3 babies about 3 1/2 weeks ago. One was still born. Now, her genitalia and area around, are kind of swollen. She has some blood or mucus coming out and I don't know what it's from. She's very fragile now and squeals when I try to pick her up. She never used to make any noise at all. Why is her genital area swollen? And what should I do?

Answer
This is not good! Chances are, she had a rough time giving birth. A guinea pig should not be bleeding still 3 and a half weeks after giving birth. Take her to the vet. It sounds like she has a vaginal infection. A stiff does of antibiotics should clear her up. Just make sure none of the medicine is made from PENICILLIN. Anything ending in "ILLIN" is bad for a guinea pig. GPs are allergic to this and this will kill them for sure. A vet trip isn't too expensive. Please take her! She is definitely not healthy, and I know this can be resolved easily. I'm wishing you luck! Find a vet in the phone book who treats "exotics." They'll know what to do! I hope this helps. Also seperate the babies from her NOW. She doesn't need them suckling off of her, and draining her already fragile body. A lifetime of happiness to you both!
