Brandnew bean makers

Question
Hello Andy,
My boyfriend and I recently received two to what I believe male guinea piggies..I call them my little bean makers! Well the problem is I really do not know much about them! One is fat and long haired Orange white and black/brown and the other is brown/orange color! They either play or fight! But when I separate them they seem to miss each other and lay next to where they can see each other! When I let them out for floor time they go after one another..Like the fat one will go up to the other one and try to hump and the other will bit at him and hell run off then the brown will run after the fat one and make him squeak and then do that really low tone Vibration cueing thing which i found out means go away(I think, is that true)! Are they fighting or playing! They are both really shy and don't seem to want to have anything to do with either me or my boyfriend! But they do not bite (hard) just little nibbles...What can I do to get them to like me enough to pick them up, or have them chill on my lap with me! What kind of toys do they like? What kinds of treats can i get them other than a bag of salad (Roman) I try to lour them out of the shyness with food is that okay?  And do they like frozen veggies? You help is greatly appreciated! And any other tips or tricks are welcome on this end as well!! Thankyou ~Amy

Answer
Hi Amy

Bean-makers, thats funny!

It is perfectly normal for two male piggies to go through a period of establishing which one is going to be the dominant one. The humping and purring that you mention is part of that. The key is to separate them if they hurt each other at all. From what you say it doesnt get to this stage (you would know if it did) but you have to use your own judgement.

You need to give the two pigs time to settle in before they learn to trust you. Coaxing them with food is absolutely the best way to build up trust. Give them time.

Guineas love virtually all veggies, so carrots, SMALL amounts of lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli etc etc will be devoured and loved. You can also get those nutty hanging treats that they like. Frozen veggies are a big no-no. Fresh fresh fresh all the way.

In terms of toys, piggies love 2 things. To chew and to hide. Therefore I recommend plastic tubes / igloos and woodchews for them to gnaw.

I hope that helps.

If you do have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask, as it would be my pleasure to give you many more tips.

Andy
