We have a guinea pig and a month ago I took her to the vet because she was having a hard time pooping the vet gave her some medicine that put good bacteria in her belly.  She did good but now she seems to be straining again at times.  Is there something that I should be adding to her diet?

Hi Connie

Your pig needs to be given plenty of water and vegetables with a high fibre content.

Can you please let me know what sex and how old your pig is so I can give you more information.

Andy

Our guinea pig is a female and she is 4 years old,  she has plenty of water, I give her fresh water every morning and she gets fresh food every morning, she gets a carrot every day and romain lettuce when we eat our supper, she likes to eat her treats when we eat our meals.  I have tried to introduce her to different veggies that are o.k. and she refuses them she only likes romain lettuce and carrots, in the summer we give her fresh cucumbers from the garden.  Connie

Answer
Hi again Connie

Thanks for your quick reply.

I wanted to rule out a condition that only occurs in adult males.

In terms of diet, you should try dandelions, and oats mixed with water. You can also use the grass pellets that are made for chinchillas.

If your pig has completely lost her appetite, you should take her back to the vet. If she is eating normally, give her 0.5ml of liquid parafin. It sounds like she has another bout of constipation.

Please let me know if anything changes.

Andy
