Guinea Pig pregnant by her brother!?

21 14:06:38

Question
About 4 months ago I adopted 3 guinea pigs (a mother and her 2 babies, one boy, one girl). The guinea pig I am asking about is Bambi. I have noticed lately that her sides have gotten big (at first I thought she was just becoming a lady) and she squeals when the other guinea pigs bump into her or if I go to pet her or pick her up (which I'm trying to be extra careful about).    My concern is, her brother is the only male and the only one who could have gotten her pregnant. Does this mean her babies could be inbred/deformed?? Also, any tips on taking care of her and the babies when they're born would be very helpful! THANK YOU!!

Answer
Hi Brittney

She sounds like she is pregnant if you can feel the babies inside the stomach then she is pregnant
they will feel like small lumps that will move
And her nipples will swell

If she is pregnant then the babies will be most likely deformed
And if she is young she may not be able to get the babies out and may die
and also she may miscarried or give birth prematurely
If the babies do survive (which there is a good chance)
Then you will have to first have to make sure that the babies have been cleaned properly if not you may need to do it your self
The mother will eat the umbilical cord and the placenta so that shouldn't be a worry
Once the babies have been cleaned give them a hour or two to settle in and then you can hold them
Give the mother lots of fresh vegetables and fruit daily and a nix of grain and pellets.
Also lots of water
Be gentle when you hold them as there bones are not that strong.
Also lots of fresh hay to eat like Alfa hay or Timothy
And provide lots of toys for them to play and explore in
And if you want them to be tame then handle them lots and handfeed them treats

You will need to wean them from there mother at about 3-4 weeks after they are born and separate the males from the females so inbreeding does not occur

And 1 last thing about 1-2 weeks before the babies are due take all the other pigs away so the new mum can be in peace

I hope this has helped good luck Brittany
