Guinea pig baby early and rejected

Question
My Guinea Pig had her babys 3 weeks early.  She had 3.  1 was dead at birth, another lived about 30 minutes, and the third has made it for 3 hours now.  I named her Hope.  The mother won't have anything to do with her.  Does she have a chance?  I have no idea what to do.  The baby Hope is so tiny.  She is trying to walk, but legs won't hold her, she is breathing good.  I tried to give her some evaporated milk and water mixture.  She tried to drink a little, and then cleaned her face.  What do I do?  I have put her in a box with a warm water bottle to keep her warm, should I force food on her or wait and see what happens?  I'm lost at what to do.

Answer
Hi Michelle.  First off, a week to a guinea pig is like a month to humans.  Chances are the young ones' lungs are underdeveloped and if that is the case you aren't going to be able to do much for her.  Can you keep her with mom in the box?  As long as the mom isn't harming her, it would be best to keep them together if possible.  The mom will keep her warm and once her milk comes in she'll want the baby to nurse because her teats will get full.  The baby has to be warm, so you may want to put a heating pad on low (don't let baby get burnt.  You might have to put magazines inbetween box and heating pad so its not too hot) under the box for heat.  Put the box half on the pad and half off so if the baby gets too hot, it can choose to move away from the heat.  Get some nutri-cal.  I get it at feed stores, PetsMart carries it also.  Feed her some of that (I think there is a dosage on the bottle).  Its nasty gooey looking stuff but full of calories she needs.  You'll want to give her some every 2-4 hours (hope you didn't plan on sleeping tonight).  The first 48hrs are crucial.
You can also buy milk replacement at a petstore.  Chances are she won't drink out of the bottle but a 1cc syringe without needle should work nicely.  Most importantly, don't let her aspirate it.  If she chokes, and gets it into her lungs, she won't have much of a chance left.  There is a product called Calf-Manna made by MannaPro company.  PetsMarts here have it, but more often it is found at feed stores.  You only need maybe a pound, but it comes in huge bags (10lbs-50lbs).  See if you can get someone to sell you 1lb of it.  It is a milk replacement for cows that guinea pigs love.  Maybe the baby will try to gnaw on it.  Put some of it with her regular food in a bowl for her and lower the bottle to where she can reach it.  Normal babies will start checking out the food and water at just a few days old.

I know this is a lot of information, but babies need a lot of care!
