Guinea Pig very ill

Question
My guinea Pig has had a Respiratory problem for the last 3 months.  She has been on all the medications. She will improve after 4 days on an antibiotic but once the antibiotic is finished, approx. 7 days later she declines.  Happens with all ABs.

I am taking her back one last time tomorrow to see the head Exotic vet at WestHills Animal Hospital.

Her major problem is breathing.  Her body heaves with each breath and her eyes become watery.  She is also coughing.  Her coughing has been going on for months.  Her breathing and watery eyes have been going on for 3 months now.  Amazing she is still alive.

This morning she was very ravenous and I hand fed her veggies which she ate readily.  Force fed her pellets and she eats her hay on and off and drinks water.

She has her good hours or days and her bad ones.

Do you have any suggestions as to what my last resort can be for her.

I have read that lasix can be used to clean out fluid from her lungs if it is indeed fluid.  Then maybe the ABs can work better?

Maybe she is a heart pig and needs heart medication also and ABs.

Or maybe she is asthmatic.  Who knows.  How can any doctor really know.

Have you ever come across a hard to cure piggy?

Answer
Hi Linda

It does sound like a rather complicated illness that your piggy has. Unfortunately, I have had personal difficulty in finding a vet that knows enough about piggies.

All your suggestions might yield positive results, but I am not a vet, so perhaps my knowledge is not advanced enough to offer any suggestions. I think you should simply continue with the vets.

Sorry I can't really help, but I wish you all the best.
