Question
Starting last night our 4 year old started losing her balance.  Her eyes go forward and back like she is dizzy,  her head also goes back and forth.  she tries to clean herself and falls over.  She is eating fine, when you give it to her cause she wont walk for it.  Her diet is pellet/ seed mix, lettuce, carrots, apples, hay.  It almost looks like someone with parkinsens.  I dont know where to start.  Thank you for any help.

Answer
Hello Brad and thanks for the question,

I apologize for the delay in replying to this question. If you are an American you know that we celebrate our independence on the 4th of July.

It sounds like an equilibrium problem and that usually comes from an ear infection or other ear problem. Thouroughly CHECK the animal's ears for mites and wax. You can clean your GP's ears with peroxidide on a q-tip. Be gentle and dab a warm water washcloth on from time to time to help break up the wax. Mites in the ears must be treated by a vet.

4 years old is getting up there in years for a GP. If it is NOT related to the ears, the only course of action you can take in this case is to thouroughly write down the symptoms and take your pet to the vet.

If this condition does not clear up with vet attention (or if he diagnosis' a CNS problem) then it sounds related to the central nervous system and that is very rare and very bad. The vet may advise that you put your friend to sleep.

Thanks and good luck to you,
Ryan
