Boar brothers

Question
I have two boar guinea pigs that are together because their brothers, but I know that boars dont always get along and that is the case here. I mean they get into little fights. They hiss and bite, but nothing ever to serious. I was just wondering if it will get worse as they get older?

Answer
Hi Becca,

What age are the brothers? They go through puberty at 4 months to around 12 months old; this is the most common time for fights.

Too small a cage/hutch is often a major factor when it comes to friendships. Boys especially need that little bit extra space so they do have room to escape each other and not get on each other's nerves. See www.cavycages.com for the best up-to-date piggy housing guide around.

Nipping, chasing, mounting, butt-sniffing, rumblestrutting, mild teeth chattering and "nosing" each other (throwing noses into the air and jumping back a bit) are all normal dominance behaviours.
You may want to keep a close eye on them if they teeth chatter or do any of the above a lot, but those are normal day-to-day acts that most piggy herds go through. Just be aware and everything should stay under control.

Best Wishes,

- Laura
