guinea pig sniffles

Question
My Guinea pig has started sniffling and sneezing today. His nose seems blocked and there is a tiny amount of clear discharge like a runny nose, he then sneezes and it seems to clear for a while but then comes back. He seems a little depressed but not too bad. He is not off his food or drink yet. Do you think I need to take him to the vet on Monday or is there anything that you can suggest for this problem?
Many thanks
Kea

Answer
Hi Kea, i've just replied to somebody else with a similar problem.   Guinea pigs can easily get respiratory infections and it does sound like your piggy has a little cold there.  It's important to keep him warm, dry and in a draught-free place, so ensure his cage is indoors while he's off weather, and he may like the warmth from a well covered hot water bottle.  Ensure the cage's bedding is always clean and dry, as damp, soiled bedding can affect a guinea pig's chest and breathing.  To help with the congestion you can dab a tiny amount of vicks vapour rub onto the nostrils, the chin and front paws. Olbas oil is also safe to use.   If you are quite concerned about it, it is usually best to get antibiotics from the vet to treat the infection, but i let nature take it's course first with the aid of home remedies.    It doesn't sound like he's in a worrying condition, and the fact that the slight discharge is clear is a good sign.  Try my suggestions, but if he's still like it for a few more days, pop him along to your vet for something stronger to fight the infection.  I hope this helps.
