QuestionI have two females that I took in from a family who didn't want them anymore and I am getting a male from another family soon. The females are a year old and I don't think they have had a litter before. I only have the one cage right now and I want to know that if the male mates with them (i know he will) is it safe for the females to become pregnant with a first little at one year of age?
Thanks.
AnswerSince you do not know the lineage of your cavies, than it is absolutely NOT okay to allow them to breed. They could carry a roan or dalmatian gene and that can lead to lethals. The age is also a factor and you guinea pigs WILL die or have SERIOUS complications if they are bred.
If you do not have the proper housing, than please do not get another cavy at this time, or get the male neutered BEFORE putting him with the females.
