Feeding Cavies

Question
I often get in trouble for feeding our guinea pigs too much tomatoes or too much cucumber. What are some other alternatives that I could feed them? I already feed them lots of pepper sprikled on top. Luttuce, I give them a handful of twice a day. I feed them hay, and give them pellets. Am I doing anything wrong, and what could I be doing better? Thank you for helping me.

Answer
Pardon me for saying so but my first impression is that this is some kind of spoof. But I will answer you anyway as other readers may wish to learn something from this.

First of all why are you feeding tomatoes at all? Again, are you seriously saying you feed them "lots of pepper"? I guess this is the red flag that makes me think this is not a legitimate question. Absolutely no pepper should be fed.

A slice of cucumber every few days is more than sufficient. Tomatoes have too much acid and will cause sores in the mouth. Guinea pig pellets are formulated to meet their daily needs, provided you're not using the grocery store type with all the little colored pieces in them. That's just eye candy for the owners and has no nutritional value.

Stick with a good brand of pellet. A piece of lettuce can be given daily, but not twice and not an entire handful at a time. Hay and pellets are what they need most. A small serving of parsley provides additional Vitamin C. So whomever is telling you that you're over feeding    tomatoes and cucumbers is right. As for pepper, no.
