crusty ear

Question
I have had my first 2 guineas since 4/07.  One has a layer of crust inside of one ear (about a dime size area).  I haven't tried to remove it-not sure how, or if it would hurt him.  no complaints when touching, doesn't seem to bother the fella.  any suggestions would help.
on a different topic, my pigs LOVE dried bananas.  only a few come in the pellet mix and I thought I'd buy dried chips for people, but I noticed that they have added sugar.  Would this harm the piggies-beyond making them get even more plump and pudgy?
Thanks for your help
Kristin

Answer
Krisin,

To clean the crust out of his ear is fairly simple. Take a cotton swab that is moist with warm water pull the ear back and start swabbing out the ear, but sure that the swab doesn't go any further down the half of the cotton part or you'll hurt his hearing. Remember that if you don't feel comfortable doing it you can always take him to the vet and have them show you how if that'll make you feel better.

The added sugar in the dried banana chips is not good for them as Guinea Pigs are prone to Diabetes and to much sugar can lead to that. There are two options here, either you can get a dehydrator and make your own dried bananas for them or you can give them maybe 2 to 3 chips every other day with lots of exercise after words to burn off the sugar and lower the risk of diabetes.

I hope this helps,
 Take care,
