Putting Male back with babies

Question
Hi Kristen,
I had my male gp Brownie neutered about three weeks ago and my female Tara had her babies a week ago. I was told I had to keep Brownie out of the cage for a month that he could still get her pregnant. I was trying to sex the babies today and am having trouble so I called my vet to see if he could do it for me. Anyway while I was talking to him I asked if Brownie could go back in the cage in about a week he told me that he could have went right back in since when they neuter male guniea pigs they take everything and there is no sperm left but, he didn't recommend me putting him back in the cage with the mom and the babies even though he gets along well with the babies on the floor he might get aggressive in the cage and kill the babies. I thought Males never did that to the babies? I am so confused and disappointed cause I know brownie is lonely in the cage by himself. I have the cages next to each other so they can see and hear each other.

Thank you
Corinne

Answer
I know even though its hard to take in, male pigs do often try to kill the babies they helped produce. Its a dominance thing and happens to every pig family. Its not just brownie. Whatver you do DO not put him in there, When the babies are old enough they can go in a sepreate cage by themselves and brownie and the mom can go back together if you feel he's lonely. They are often not lonely and I have two males that are sepreate but they are still happy don't worry about it. He'll be fine, and congrats on the babies. Please rate me
