i have taken my guinea pig to the the vet 2 days ago cos she had green discharge and looked sore below, the vet said she may well have urine infection and gave her atibiotic and pain killer, yesterday she had really bad diarriah and this morning shes bleeding quite badley from below, is this a result of her medicine or is there somthing else wrong i really worried and have rong my vet and am waiting for them to get back to me. also i have another one also female ,they  live together but has no signs of illness only not eating i asked the vet to treat her with the same treatment just in case, she still isnt eating nor pooing. is she having sympathey with the sick one.

Hello Donna,

They sound like they are both ill. If they are not eating they need to be force fed. Since the one is not pooing, she should see the vet soon and possibly be tube fed. When piggies don't eat, their tummies shut down. Once their tummies shut down if it's not reversed soon, they could die. The other sounds like the problem is digestive, possibly a bacterial infection. I would get her back to the vet soon. Since she is on antibiotics, she should also be on a probiotic like Acidophilus (found in the vitamin section of the drug store). Acidophilus replaces the good tummy bacteria the piggies need to digest their food and antibiotics kill off. This could cause the diarrhea. It's also possible she was given an unsafe antibiotic. I'm going to give you a link to a site listing them since you didn't mention the one she was given. If you find it on the list contact your vet IMMEDIATELY.

Answer
Hello Donna,

I'm so sorry about Pippin. That's never an easy decision to have to make especially so close to the holidays. I'm sure it was the right one though since she was in such awful pain. I'm glad Peggy is doing better. Try giving her some Romaine lettuce. She may eat it on her own since she is doing so well with the force feeding and it's good for helping to get a good amount of fiber in her. Hopefully she will make a full recovery soon. I'm going to send you a link to a site where you can make a memorial for your precious Pippin if you like. Good luck with little Peggy and Merry Christmas.
