Question
I have a female that is approximately 4 mths old. Apparently, sometime recently my 8 yr old put her in with his male who is 1 1/2. She is now pregnant but i'm not sure how far along she is. I can feel babies moving in her belly. It feels like at least 3 right now. Is there any way to tell how far along she is and when I can expect them? Her teets seem to have gotten bigger in the last 2 weeks. Also, is there anything I need to do to the cage to prepare as far as bedding and such? Any help would be greatly appreciated since I really can't afford a vet bill right now.

Answer
The babies start to move in the mom's belly 4 weeks before they are due, so you can count on at least being that close. Usually the teats start to change about a week before the babies are due, so I would be watching her closely. There is really nothing special to do with the cage, try to keep it really clean because she could have babies at any moment. Usually with in the last day of pregnancy the mom's belly will start to change positions and get lower, closer to the ground. Some moms like an extra baby blanket to lay on in their cage when they are expecting. Also each baby should come out with in 5 minutes or less of each other, if she takes more than 15 minutes of continuos contractions then try putting her in some warm water in a bathroom sink. Since she is 4 months she should be fine, she may appreciate your help cleaning off the babies, but other than that just listen for little squeaks in the night and watch out for babies soon.
