Sudden death in Guinea pigs and rabbits

21 14:34:59

Question
I had two guinea pigs (female) and one rabbit, all kept together quite happily. Kept in a hutch for 12/18 months, no issues. Died suddenly one morning, all three together, found outside, stretched out. Is this something that can happen? feeding using a petshop formula, some vegetable left overs. No sign of physical injury.

Answer
I'm really sorry that you've lost three pets at once.

Were they kept outside?  If so, where they sheltered from sun and wind?  What are the climate conditions where you live?  Were they all getting the same feed?  I'm afraid I can't really think of a reason that all three would have died at the same time.  Neither guinea pigs nor rabbits tolerate heat well.  If there was a sudden increase in temperature where you live that could account for all three dying, but I still think there would have been signs such as drooling and lethargy first.  But heat can take a very fast toll.

Rabbits and guinea pigs shouldn't be caged together.  Rabbits can carry diseases that can cause illness in guinea pigs without having any disease themselves.  Also, dietary needs of guinea pigs and rabbits vary enough so there isn't a feed that is nutritious for both species.

Perhaps it would be a good idea for you to call a veterinarian and ask about this.  If you don't know a vet that works with rabbits and guinea pigs, or don't feel comfortable calling, try your local 4-H office and ask for a guinea pig (cavy) project leader.  These leaders often have a lot of information or know where to find the needed information.
