Question
One of my female guinea pigs had just had 3 babies 2 days ago. they all seem very healthy and lively. but i noticed the other night when i was cleaning them out that the black and white one is blind in its left eye. im definately sure it is blind in that eye as i have tried to test it and see if it cant see me moving my finger right close to that eye , and it cant, but when i move my finger infront of the other eye it flinches. the baby seems to be able to cope well but sometimes bumps into its mummy. what caused the guinea pig to be blind in that eye? and what should i do to help it?

Answer
Diane,

The most likely cause for the baby to be blind in one is most likely due to a genetic disorder. One of the parents could have had a gene that caused the little one to be blind in one eye.

The baby will learn as it gets older how to get around easier and better. The baby is still young and still learning. Guinea Pigs are very smart and are able to adapt to any situation. Give the baby fresh foods containing lots of vitamin C and A, this will keep the other eye healthy and may return some sight to the blind eye.

Take care now,
