wonky eye

Question
hi. when i got my guinea pig, he had very clear, circular eyes. after a few months of having him, i noticed that his one eye started to look kind of droopy, and even had slimy gunky stuff in it in the mornings. i wanted to take him to the vet, but i just don't have the money (having trouble finding a job). my mom told me it would probably just go away. over time, the gunky stuff was gone, and his eye seemed fine, other than the fact that it was very droopy. his other eye is fine, and the skin around it is all even, and you can't see any part around his eye, just the regular part. on the bad eye, the skin surrounds it fine at the top, but at the bottom his eye droops about 3mm from where it should be. lately it has almost seemed red, and there is little brown spots. i'm worried it is infected. the only thing is, it doesn't seem to bother him at all.
is there anything wrong with him? anything i can do?

Answer
Hi Steph,

The only advice I can give you is to look over at Guinea Lynx - www.guinealynx.info
If you post on the forum they might be able to help you further.

Your pig Needs a vet; without a diagnosis and treatment I'm afraid she could lose her sight. Its hard to tell what is wrong with her eye without being seen, but if it is infection it will be advanced and she could already have permanant damage.

I hope you can get your mom to understand how serious this is for a guinea pig, and that even "small" things which she thinks could go away on their own require veterinary advice. Some things which many people think will go away on their own actually kill piggies, so it's important you and your mom understand that when a pig shows signs of illness or infection, it is usually pretty serious.

Best Wishes,

- Laura
