Question
Hi,
I have five guinea pigs, four males and a female.  One male got the female pregnant for my science fair project, I had every intention of keeping both of the babies, which were both males, and the fourth guinea pig is one that I took in because I knew someone who didn't want him a few years ago. Their names are Panda, Sweet Pea, Cappuccino, Espresso, and Cocoa.  They are not my first guinea pigs, I have also had Barry and took in Buster and G-baby, so I am usually quite knowledgeable about guinea pigs.  However, I have a problem.

I usually kept Panda in with his sons, Cappuccino and Espresso, because they got along unusually well.  Sweet Pea stayed on her own and so did Cocoa.  However, about two months ago, I noticed that the other guinea pigs wouldn't let Panda eat and were bullying him all the time so I had to separate him.  He also fought with cocoa, they drew blood on each other about a year ago exactly, so for the time being he is housing with Sweet Pea.  I knew she would get pregnant and knew that I would have to arrange for him to be neutered but I had no other choice and now I am having second thoughts on everything.

What if he doesn't make it through the surgery? What if it weakens him so much that he's listless all the time? What if he just gives up after the surgery and dies? If you have any experience on the topic, please tell me what the chances are of him coming out perfectly healthy and unharmed because I'm so nervous I'm going out of my mind.

Thank you in advance and sorry for the length of this inquiry,

Nicole

Answer
You should never had put him with Sweet Pea, you should have put him in a cage on his own, now what are you going to do if Sweet Pea dies or needs a c-section? What are you going to do with the babies?

It sounds like you don't have C&C cages, please build them. They are very cheap and easy to make and the good thing is you can make on big cage and put a divider down the middle.
This could also be a reason why the males started fighting, because they didn't have enough room.

Neutering is not very risky if you have a good vet.
