Question
QUESTION: Ok I'm gonna start this whole pregnant guinea pig thing ALL OVER! yea... ok here we go

My Guinea Pig, Fudge, who is about 3 months old appears to be pregnant but I'm not sure... she has gained a lot of weight... ok here are symptoms of how she's acting and what not.

- 2 days ago she weighed 1 pound 1 and 3/8 ounces
- yesterday she weighed in at 1 pound 1 and 3/4 ounces
- Today she weighed in at 1 pound 2 ounces.
- She does seem to be drinking a teeny bit more water
- She eats a litte bit more food the usual
- her tummy seems to be much larger
- If she turns a certain way she has like a "bump" like fatness on her lower stomach
- I'm not sure... But this morning when I woke up I saw her in a corner with all the bed shavings around her as if she was making a nest I think...
- She seems much more testy then usual.
- She actually bit my sister today which she has NEVER done... I'm not sure if it's cause she was upset and didn't want to be handled or maybe she just some how smelled like food but my sis hadn't eating lately.
- She starts and finishes here carrot and hay as soon as I give it to her (this might be the more food that she is eating instead of her hard pellet food)
- She doesn't mind me holding her but she fights when I get to pulling her out of the cage and she'll only let me hold her for like 5 minutes and then she'll start squeaking and moving around a lot.

Even my mom who would dread having her be pregnant is almost sure she is... It thought I would try this again to see for sure instead of going out to the vet... (i don't like the guy there very much and he thought my boar (Fudge's brother) was a sow... he had to "double check" (aka 5 minutes of checking) to see that he really was a boar.)

Well I just know I've had her for about... a month and a half give or take. And when I received her she had been with other boars... (They told me all the babies from her moms litter were boars they were WRONG!)

Yea so pleaseeeeee help me out, in again trying to find out if she is pregnant... Sorry I keep asking basically the same question... I'm anxious but questioning her pregnancy...

Thanks!
Bree

ANSWER: Hi Bree

Thanks for taking the time again to write down all the factors about your piggy, however, I'm not sure what else I can say.

I indicated that the weight gain, her behaviour (testy) etc indicated that there was a good chance she was pregnant. The pictures you kindly sent me did not give me a definate view of if she is pregnant but I always doubted they would as they are only pictures.

I cant give you a 100% answer to this because I am not there with you to physically see your piggy. I can only say that, based on the evidence she is pregnant.

You cant change if she is pregnant or not by worrying. If, as we suspect she is pregnant, then over time you will feel babies moving inside her and I will be here to answer any questions you have about the process.

QUESTION: Ok now I mean like I completely agree that she is pregnant... but she like doesn't seem that fat... yes she has gained weight but where she's bigger it's squishy (and I didn't push to to hard I know it can hurt the babies) she does whine though when I go to feel her tummy... but I'm still iffy about this whole thing only because her "new largeness" is so soft and I've read and it's mostly saying it's harder... and I'm still not sure but I do believe that again I may have felt a baby move but who can really be sure till they're like a week away... I know their pelvic bones move like 2 or 3 days before birth... Well I'm not exactly sure how to tell if hers has I mean I know that somehow it's supposed 2 measure up to about 2 fingers width... Where would you measure this? and Thank you with all the help again...

Bree

ANSWER: Hi Bree

You are right, we may not be 100% sure until much nearer the potential birth.

When the pelvic bones open it will be very obvious as its 2 inches wide, just near the butt.

QUESTION: ok first off I'm not sure but I think she may have had a miscarriage... I'm not sure so I don't know. I see no blood anywhere so I don't know.

She seems to have lost weight...
2 days ago she was 1 pound 2 ounces
yesterday she was 1 pound 1 ounce and between 5/8 and 7/8
Today she weighs 1 pound 1 ounce and 2/8

But I still thinks she might be because her weight did that before... it was high then dropped and went straight back up.

Also her stomach seems to be tightening and her stomach is still the same size. I think she's already drinking more then yesterday... but then again it could just be me hoping she's still pregnant...

Please help me out... AGAIN

Thanks,
Bree

Answer
Hi Bree

You would definately see blood in the cage floor if she had had a miscarriage.

The weight loss is quite small so this is within normal ranges. You are doing the right thing in weighing regularly.

Its such a shame that you had a bad experience with your vet as I feel sure that a good vet would put your mind at rest once and for all.

That said, lets keep doing a daily weigh, see what develops and I will support you in any way I can.

You are much better continuing to use this site rather than email as I check it whilst at work too.
