Guinea pig has broken a tooth?

Question
Hello, I have two female GPs age 10months. I went to feed them some milk treats and noticed that Daisy's mouth looked strange. It was as though her mouth was slightly open. When I lookede closer it looks like the bottom teeth have snapped right down to the gum line. She still squeaks and begs for food and managed to eat the choc treats but
I am worried that she may struggle with her pellets. Is this a common thing? Also, will I need to take her to the vet or will they grow back on their own?

Answer
Hello Amy,

Piggies shouldn't actually be given any form of chocolate or milk products (or any dairy at all) as they can actually be deadly. So it would be best to leave those out of her diet entirely. You are in luck, I'm actually going through this same thing with one of my boys as we speak. She should see a vet, particularly if the teeth are not broken evenly. She should be checked to make certain they are broken and it's not the result of a jaw misalignment. If they are uneven, the vet can file or trim them down and she should be fine in a few days. They will grow back on their own but it's important they grow back evenly. Until her teeth grow back and she can eat properly again, you can crush pellets and mix them with water to make a mush that's easier for her to eat. If she's lost weight or won't touch the pellet mush, you can give her baby oatmeal with a vitamin c supplement added. It will help her gain a bit of weight while she heals. Kurama, my broken teeth boy, won't touch his oatmeal unless it is mixed with baby food (peas, carrots, and bananas, all mixed in together with the oatmeal) so that may work for her too. This is not a nutritionally complete meal for them as there really is not enough fiber and there are quite a few preservatives, but she shouldn't be eating it long enough to actually do any damage and the important thing right now is for her to keep eating. Make sure she has plenty of timothy hay available, it will help her teeth wear down properly and it will give her the much needed fiber. Hopefully she will be back to normal again very soon. Good luck!
