guinea pig breeding

Question
I am a new guinea pig owner and a little worried. I bought a 4 week old male
and let my husband convince me to get a 4 week old female. We have had
them for 3 weeks now and they get along great, but I have minimal
knowledge about guinea pigs and am a little freaked about diet and their
breeding habits. I've read a few books, but they've only manage to confuse
me with conflicting information.
The male has recently begun to hump the female and I wasn't sure if this is
too early. I've looked all over online to find someone who could answer a few
questions and I hop you don't mind.
Once she is pregnant, how soon after should I be taking out the male from
the cage and for how long should they be separated? Also, once I know she is
pregnant, what type of extra foods or nutrients should I be giving her? Is
there anything I should do to help or be aware of for her birthing?
I'm sorry if I'm bombarding you with questions...
Thank you

Answer
HI jessica

This is not good at 4 weeks old they should just be leaving the mum i normaly wait until they are 4 months old.

the risks of her dying during birth are high because of her young age but do not give up hope she may not be pregnant seperate them immediatley so that no more mating goes on.

If she is pregnant then i will help you through it

it takes about 9 to 10 weeks as you no you should give her plenty of exercise handle her little and also feed her extra as she goes on with the pregnancy.
a diet of

Vegetables
fruit
and grain should be provided daily

At birth a older pig will not need assistance but a younger pig will

i suggest take her to the vet to get her checked out and to see if she actualy is pregnant but if there is n o vet that can help there is not much you can do but hope

i would think that there is a slim chance of her surviving but remeber to not give up

Allthe best  please emaail me if anything goes wrong FRom Mitch
