Guinea Pig is Staggering When She Walks

Question
Hello-my guinea pig, Amelia, was fine yesterday, but now today she is still drinking water but hasn't eaten. She can barely walk, it looks as though she is doing all she can just to stand up. She is 5 years old, and I am so worried about her. Is there anything I can do to help her? Do you think she is in pain? She has only spoken to me once today, just a low few squeaks. I am worried sick. Please help.

Answer
Hi Jane

Your guinea pig is quite old, so the condition being linked to old age shouldnt be ruled out.

However, it is equally likely that she has some form of paralysis. Had you told me that her appetite was still healthy, I could have given some advice to help her yourself. There is a form of paralysis which is due to calcium and vitamin D deficiency that is very short term.

However, due to the lack of appetite, I recommend you take Amelia to a qualified vet immediately as she requires medical attention.

Andy

P.S Good luck.
