neutering male

Question
Dear Lorena,

We live in Pompton Plains, NJ (northern)and are in need of the best guinea pig veterinarian for neutering, can you recommend anyone?  We love our male guinea pig, but we don't want to breed and he bullies our other guinea pigs, so we have no other choice at this point.  We are very worried that he could die while under anesthesia or that the neutering could cause him to be uncomfortable.  Please advise.

Thank You,

Sheila & Robert

Answer
Sheila & Robert:

First, let me apologise for the delay in my response.  I normally try to answer all of my questions within 48 hours of their asking, but AllExperts has been having some technical difficulties and I have not been able to send a response.  I do apologise for the delay in my response.

Second, I am not from the New Jersey area, so, unfortunately, I cannot advise on a reputable veterinarian.  However, what I can do is give you the name and web site of a cavy club in your area.  I would recommend that you contact someone in that club and ask about the vet recommendation.  The club is Mid-Atlantic Cavy Breeder's Association.  Here is their website:  http://macbapa.tripod.com/  Their links page also has links to many member breeders' web sites.  You might find a contact information there.  If not, their secretary's name is Vera Rhodes.  Here is her email: vcrcavies@hotmail.com.  She might be able to put you in touch with someone who can help.

I would not be too concerned about the neutering itself.  With male animals, it is a fairly minor procedure.  I have not heard of anyone having the procedure done and then having any problems with it.

I hope this is helpful.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me.  Good luck!

Lorena
