Rash on baby cavie

Question
My family just recently got a new guinea pig baby. He is probably around 2-3 months old. Recently however he has had a bald patch on his left front leg. It seems like this spot is irritating him because it keeps getting bigger, and there are bumps in this patch that are minimally bleeding or appear to be open wounds. Judging from that I'm guessing that he is itching it. I can't find what it could be perhaps you could help me out more. I tried putting some anti-bacterial fluid on it, Betadine, and I hope that will help the little guy a bit.
Thank you for your help!
Julia

Answer
He most likely has mites, they are under the skin and can really irritate a pig to the point that they will chew their skin and itch until it bleeds. Mites have to be treated with a shot of Ivermectin, which you can get from a vet or you can buy a bottle at a local farm supply store for about $44 and do the shot yourself, if you'd like to do the shot yourself I can give you the dosage. Other than mites the only other thing it could be is ringworm, but ringworm rarely causes severe itching like mites do, but if someone recently had ringworm then that is a possibility. Until he can get a shot you can try putting some soothing lotion on the area to help relieve some irritation, you can also use a Tar and Sulfur shampoo to help relieve some of the itching. Let me know if you have any more questions.
