Question
Hi, I bought my baby guinea pigs a week ago from a farm. They've settled in very well but I noticed this morning that one of them had a mark on her nose. When I looked closer, her nose was swollen and the skin looked scabby around one nostril. I have bathed it twice with salt water and she doesn't mind this at all, so I'm assuming it doesn't hurt. She's still eating fine and her temperament hasn't altered. Does this sound like anything to worry about or something that should go with more salt water bathing?

Thanks

Answer
not something to worry about,it is most likly one of two things, especially given it was from a farm, either another piggy nipped its nose (which is common) in which case so long as it doesnt look infected i would just leave it. or... it is the beginning of mange. if there is hair loss on the nose and the hair around it is thinning or looks sore and scabby then it is probably mange. a simple treatment of anti mange and tea tree oil cream for a week or two will do the trick, you can get these at most pet stores. apply the anti mange spray all over the body and the cream where it looks sore.
