male pig unable to breed

Question
hi, I have a male piggie who bred successfully last year, however this year he doesn't seem to be able to breed. I left him for 5 weeks with my 2 females and neither have become pregnant. He seems perfectly healthy although he does seem to have become rather smelly!!!

Answer
Hi Claire,

This does seem unusual, although I am not sure how often female guinea pigs come into heat, so it could be possible that neither of them have been ready to breed whilst they've been with the male.

Pay a visit to www.gorgeousguineas.com - it's full of aromatherapy shampoos, including those for both males and females to encourage romance. It's worth a try, and if they don't work, at least it'll stop your male being so smelly!

How long has it been since you put your three piggies together? Perhaps one or both have fallen pregnant, and it's too early to tell. It could also be possible that your male would prefer some one-on-one time, rather than being put in with two females.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help; my two sows fell pregnant by accident. Good luck!

Jenny.
