Guinea Pig Mental health

Question
Hi there,
I have a question about the odd behavior of one of my two pigs. Rosie and Kumo are two year old females & have been housed together the whole time. They never were friends but got along fine, until recently Kumo became increasingly agitated and her sides started losing hair, so we seperated their cage into 2 parts to be safe. Whilst kumo became less agressive, she continues to lose hair and i am not sure if she is pulling it out ( i have seen her do that only twice) or if its falling out! She has always been moody, but lately has also been acting especially odd, having mini freakouts ( for lack of better words) and sitting in one spot not moving all day. Shes eating, drinking and urinating , etc., normally, but is also losing weight. Basically, can guinea pigs have mental health problems? Any ideas on what i can do? Thank you SO much!!!!!

Answer
it sounds more like she has mange which as a knock on effect and makes her feel rotten, and her fits are probbaly reaction to sudden pains from the mites

if the skin where she is losing hair is red, or with dry skin or scabby then it is almost certianly mange.

tea tree oil cream
mange/mite spray
guinea friendly shampoo
ear drops.

use each of these as directed on the top, with the spray make sure you apply tea tree oil on any bald patches afterwards as most sprays are alcohol based and will dry up her skin and encourage scratching also you should treat both of them at the same time, this is the only real drawback to having more than one piggie s if one has mange or mites the other probably will have.

if however you think it might be something else then I would recommend taking her to a vet to get a good look at her.
