Guinea pig malocclusion

Question
My rescue piggy, Minty went off his food and was not himself. My vet treated him and said that he had some malocclusion and spurs on his teeth.

He came home yesterday, and is still not eating very much. He likes the probiotic that my vet gave me to administer, but is only nibbling at the odd thing. Am I being too impatient expecting him to be back to normal so quickly? He is also 'clicking' his teeth together. I have tried to syringe feed him some pureed food, but he is not at all interested.

He is much more lively though and is giving small kisses again. Could you tell me is all normal and whether there is anything else that I could do. He has to return to the vet on Friday for a follow up.

Thank you so much

Elaine

Answer
Hello Elaine,
it sounds that he is slowly getting better and gaining a little bit of strength. If your guinea pig is eating any type of hay, I would try giving alfalfa hay as it is sweeter and more apealing to guiena pig that are sick or young. It can also help put on weight until he is back to his normal self. Also, I do know of a food that has had great results with guinea pigs and it's called Oxbow critical care. It has been known to have great results with animals that are sick.

From what I've been noticing is that it seems that guinea pigs can take a little while to get back to normal after being sick. You just have to be patient and try lots of different things. You can mix the water with half pedialyte as that will provide extra nutrients as well to help.
I hope all this helps and I hope your guinea pig recovers soon.
