Wierd hole in head

Question
For a while now my almost 7yr old guinea pig has had this weird hole right next to his right eye. It's also letting out this white liquid which I assume is puss and when I clean it off you can basically see in it but it fills up. He doesn't seem to be in pain from it either. Its almost like a 3rd eye!!

What's wrong with my little guy ?!??! :(

Answer
This is a hard one to evaluate without a picture. Would it be possible for you to take a picture of it to send?

The tear ducts are in the corner of the eye just like ours are. When under stress a pig will 'cry' a white substance that is not puss. It isn't infection. Puss is yellowish in color and very thick. The white 'tears' are very white and also thin in nature. Your old boy is by cavy standards a very old man. I suspect this is age related stress. The life span of most pigs is 5 years. Seven is a real old timer.

As they age and begin to reach their time most pigs start what is known as a 'wasting syndrome.' They appear a little thinner, you can feel their backbone and even their face looks like it's narrowed down because of the weight loss. It's an indicator of an approaching departure.

They're not in pain, they will still eat and drink. They just start to get slower and lazier just like we do in the declining years. It sounds like this is the case with your fella.

This isn't something that your vet will be able to fix. It sounds like it's just the normal aging process. When the eye is continually seeping the hair around the  tear duct begins to decline from the dampness, giving the appearance of being a big hole. If it is puss you'd see the entire eye crust up and it would leave no doubt that he has an eye infection. I don't think that's what you're describing. You are right, he isn't in pain.

Please do try to send a picture so I can get a first hand look. My experience tells me it's not an infection process, but it would be much better to see it in a picture.
